    What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique address that enables you to have an easy to recognize address for your Web Site and your E-Mail. For example, instead of having a URL address that is shared with your provider such as http://www.yourprovider.com/~yourname/, your address will be http://yourname.com/. And your name will be of your choosing.

SOME REASONS TO HAVE A DOMAIN NAME:

    • Pride - If you are a business that takes pride in who you are and what you have to offer, you will want the recognition that goes with your name. Your organization or business will have a unique address that no one else can use.
    • Recognition - you will have your own identification. It will be easier to find your business on the Net or to send and receive E-Mail. People just have to remember your name and type it.
    • Prestige - by having your own address you will be able to better compete with much larger companies.
    • E-Mail - you can now set up a number of mailboxes and departmentalize by having different addresses.
    • Autoresponder - Your domain name will have it's own address and will be able to deliver multiple documents for you automatically. The Autoresponder will also log all requests that it responds to. The log profile will be mailed to you weekly.
    • Names are going fast. If you want to be sure that your name will not be taken by someone else, you should take action now. Remember that this is a world wide network and a name can only be used once.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME:

The first segment of the domain name indicates the host (computer) name. The last segment identifies the top-level domain. Any items in between identify subdomains, which are networks or individual machines within the top-level domain.

The following is a list of some of the current top-level domains: EDU - Education , GOV - Government, MIL - Military, COM - Commercial (the most common name for business use), NET - Internet Providers (optional)

Your domain name can not have spaces or unusual characters. Only letters, numbers and dashes (i.e. the minus sign - ) are permitted. The InterNIC recommends 12 characters or less in a domain name. (Actually you can have up to 24 characters but it becomes a lot to type and remember every time).

Once you have decided on a few possible names, you can check them out by clicking on "Domain Name Availability" at the bottom of this page to see if they've been taken. After checking, hit the back button on your browser to return to this page. There is currently a registration backlog of more than 30,000 domains per month. If you submit an application for a specific name today, there is no guarantee that this domain will be available when your application has been processed.
